Cerbera odollam: a ‘suicide tree’ and cause of death in the state of Kerala, India.
It has a rounded crown with leaves that are simple, elliptical and spirally arranged. The bark is greyish and rough. Flowers are white with a yellow center and grow in clusters.
The fruits however, develop singly.
Fruits are round, 5—10 cm in diameter, with a hard fibrous outer covering adapted for dispersal by water. The fruits are green, turning pink then black. This tree is common on seashores and mangroves but have also been planted in many parts of the island.
The seed of this plant is poisonous and have been used in the Phillippines to stupefy fish. It has also been used as rat poison. In Burma, the seed oil is mixed with other oils to be used as insect repellent or insecticides.
In Indonesia, derbera obtained from the seeds have also been used for medicinal purposes. The oil is rubbed on the body as a remedy for cold, scabies and rheumatism. The bark, latex and roots of this plant is being used in India oddollam purgatives and emetics.
The seed can cause poisoning in humans and symptoms include nausea and vomiting. The poisoning may also result in hyperkalemia, which can cause death. Native, Naturalised and Cultivated Species.
