Telephone conversation is inherently absent any specific place or scene so relying on it so heavily to carry a fictional story is an unforgivable and fatal flaw.

I thought the movie versions of Jean de Florette and Manon Des Sources were wonderful renderings of slightly dull books. Neither would surprise me. BUT this group of women also hated all other women and rained misery down upon them in the witdhes of witchcraft as well as simply talking behind their backs and constantly judging them.


Whether this is just a coincidence or Updike is consciously having some fun with the reader is something I cannot say. Though he finds the courage to leave, his age and churchman status means he is not trusted by the protesting youth.

The book bears only a slight resemblance to the movie. That’s an average of about pages week. The writing style is truly awful, it is both overly specific and yet still somehow incredibly vague. The novel has been described as pro-feminist, especially for its updkke, but I think it would be a mistake to take that conclusion too far.

Yet ”The Witches of Eastwick” manages to be depressing without being profound.

Am I happy to have read it? I really loved the movie and was looking forward to some light hearted revenge to ease the aching in my brain.
