He endures the indignities of segregation with good humor. Everywhere he goes, his manner is open-hearted Hughes runs into Koestler, whom he does not know, in former Soviet Central Asia, and for a time they travel together.
His account of the final days before his ship leaves, tailed by Japanese men charged with keeping an eye on him, is quite humorous.
